Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Arthur Lee Jackson, Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026. He fought a courageous battle with his health, but he never stopped thanking God for His goodness and singing his favorite gospel songs.

Arthur was born on January 25, 1936, to the late Elijah Sr. and Peniniah Jackson in Flint, Texas. He was the youngest of seven children, with two infant siblings who preceded him in death. At an early age, he became a member of New Hope Baptist Church. His nickname was “Nook,” which stuck with him his whole life.

Mr. Jackson attended Stanton High School, where he was a star basketball player and track star. He served as the captain of his basketball team and won the state championship in the 880. After attending high school, he met the love of his life, Joyce Mae Rider, in the summer of 1954. He was 18, and she was 16. After a short courtship, they married and soon welcomed seven children to the fold. They were married for 46 years before Joyce went to be with the Lord in 2000. He was employed with General Dynamics in Fort Worth and Trane in Tyler for many years, but he also pursued his interest in tax preparation. He was truly a hard worker and someone that his family could depend on. In his later years, he loved sitting in nature and looking at the birds. His first love was spending time with his family. He enjoyed drinking coffee in the morning with family and discussing the goodness of the Lord and the news. And once his health started to decline, he got great joy from daily conversations with his favorite caregiver and friend.

Arthur was truly a man of God. He was a deacon at New Hope Baptist Church, and he took his responsibilities with great pride. He was nominated for Man of the Year in 2008-2009 and 2016. He was a deacon whom people in the church and community could depend on. Also, he was a member of the mass church choir and male chorus for many years. He was a self-taught construction expert who was known for building and renovating houses. He built two houses from the ground up, one in Whitehouse and one in Flint. He was definitely a craftsman who shared his talents with others. Also, if you were an elderly person in the community and needed home repairs, he would try to assist you.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah Sr. and Peniniah Jackson; his beautiful wife, Joyce; his brothers, Elijah Jr., Robert, and Jamaxie; and two sisters, Annie Mae and Imogene.

He leaves to cherish his memory: four sons, Anthony Jackson (Sally) of Arp, Arthur Jackson Jr. (Cynthia) of Flint, Dr. Antonious Jackson (Keisha) of Waxahachie, and Aaron Jackson of Weatherford; three daughters, Brenda Campbell (James) of Flint, Denise Basher (Ricky) of Corinth, Rochelle Dahmer (Phillip) of Hattiesburg, MS, special niece/daughter, Gwendolyn Butler (Patrick) of Red Oak, Tx; sister, Fannie Mae Goodman of Dallas; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends, and loved ones. The family wants to give a special acknowledgment and thanks to Ms. Debra Herbert, Mr. J’s caregiver and friend.
