IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evangelist Sarah
Jean Johnson-Lee
February 22, 1940 – July 4, 2023
Mrs.Sarah Jean Johnson Lee passed away peacefully on July 4, 2023. She was born on February 22, 1940 in Mer Rouge, Louisiana. She was the second of twelve children born to Charley Johnson and Evelyn Gladys DeBose Johnson.
Sarah confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Mt. Zion COGIC in Bastrop, Louisiana under the leadership of Supt. L. H. White. Sarah attended grade school at St. Matthew Elementary and Union High School, both in Mer Rouge, Louisiana. She completed two years of college at Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana. Sarah and her sisters Norma and Cora, known as the "Johnson Sisters Trio", assisted with their college tuition by singing in various churches throughout Louisiana. Offerings were received and paid toward their tuition.
After completing two years of college, she married Curtis Lee, Sr. of Bastrop, Louisiana. Sarah and Curtis moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and started their life together. Sarah and Curtis united with Richardson Chapel COGIC in Baton Rouge under the leadership of Bishop W. K. Gordon, Sr. They were blessed with two sons, Curtis, Lee, Jr. and Vencent Edward Lee. Both sons will continue living in Tyler, Texas with their aunt Helen-Princess Smith.
In the mid seventies the family moved to Tyler, Texas because Curtis accepted employment there. After moving to Tyler, the family united with Smith Temple COGIC under the leadership of the late Supt. W. B. Bookman. She later served under the leadership of the present Bishop David R. Houston.
One of Sarah's joys was when she teamed up with another Evangelist named Wander Foley. They believed and obeyed the command of God to "Go into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in" - Luke 14-23. And they did just that!!!. These two Holy Ghost filled evangelist visited hospitals, prisons, nursing homes and even the streets to win souls to Christ. Many lives were changed and continue to be changed because of Evangelist Sarah Lee and Evangelist Wanda Foley.
Sarah's husband Curtis Lee, Sr. was licensed and ordained an Elder by Bishop David R. Houston. Curtis, Sr. was then appointed Pastor of Riverside COGIC of Lindale, Texas, where the family united and she served as First Lady until Curtis, Sr.'s death. During her late husband pastorage, she served in the Youth department, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Bible Band. This work continued under the present Pastor of Riverside COGIC, Pastor Preston White, until she became too ill to serve.
While Evangelist Sarah Lee only had two biological children, God blessed her with many God-children, whom she loved, adored and continually prayed for. Many of her God- children continue the ministry that she instilled in them. They are preaching, teaching, singing and meeting the needs of others as Christ compels us to do.
Over a span of fifty years, Evangelist Sarah Lee has served in ministry. On July 4, 2023, the Lord called her from labor to reward.
Leaving to cherish her precious memories: two sons, Curtis Lee, Jr. and Vencent Edward Lee of Tyler, TX. Five sisters, Jeanette Harrison (Otis) of San Bernadino, CA, Gloria Olive (Alfonso) of Moreno Valley, CA., Edna Mullen (Robert) and Bessie Johnson, both of Bastrop, LA, Helen-Princess Smith of Tyler, TX.. Three brothers, James Johnson (Lenda) of Detroit, MI, Charley Johnson, Jr. of Dallas, TX and Robert Johnson (Beatrice) of Shreveport, LA and a host of nephews, nieces, God-Children, relatives and friends.
