IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gloria
Mumphrey
September 18, 1950 – December 29, 2024
Gloria Stine was born on September 18, 1950, to Asa Stine Sr. and Lola Belle Hightower Stine. She was the fifth of nine children born to this union. Coming from very humble beginnings, Gloria and her seven siblings shared lots of fun times growing up in the country. She was known for her spirited and lively personality, earning her the affectionate nickname "Poncho." Gloria approached every challenge with strong determination and never backed down.
Gloria graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1969. In high school she developed the love for sewing and became an amazing seamstress. Gloria was very smart and extremely creative and excelled in any task or venture she took on. While in high school, she met and began dating her future husband, Jerry Mumphrey. After high school, Gloria attended Tyler Jr. College (TJC).
Shortly after graduating with a degree in Fashion Merchandising from Tyler Jr. College, Gloria married the love of her life, Jerry Mumphrey of Tyler, Texas. They were married on June 5, 1972, and had three children (Tamara, Jermaine-deceased, and Jerron). In addition to their biological children, Gloria raised her nephew Dominick James as her son until his untimely death on June 10, 2007. Gloria and Jerry remained married (52 years) until her homegoing on December 29, 2024. She was a dedicated wife who always supported her husband during and after his retirement from Major League Baseball.
For many years, Gloria dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mother. At home, she nurtured her children and supported them in various activities - for Tamara, it was dance and gymnastics; for Jerron, it was baseball and more baseball, and for Dominick, it was art. Over the course of her life, she pursued various business ventures, highlighting her entrepreneurial spirit. She demonstrated her incredible talent through creating and designing clothing, installing wallpaper, and crafting beautiful floral arrangements, among other endeavors. Her immense talent and creativity as an interior designer left a lasting impression, transforming spaces into works of art that reflected her unique vision and impeccable taste. Gloria's career journey culminated in her role as a property manager, where her skills continued to shine.
Gloria was a true believer in Jesus Christ and was a member of New Life Worship Center in Tyler, TX until her health began to fail in 2019. She had a beautiful voice and loved singing in the choir, as well as at home. She would walk around singing spiritual songs and hymns daily as she went about her normal activities. Her Christ-like spirit was evident in the way she cared for her family and friends. Gloria was always eager to help others, though depending on who you were, you might first receive a gentle scolding. Beneath her tough exterior lay a heart of gold. Affectionately known as "Aunt Poncho," she cherished spending time with her nieces and nephews. Gloria also adored and loved her best friend, Karen Williams. Although distance kept them apart, nothing could break their bond for they were "sisters" and loved one another as such.
Back in the day, Gloria cherished organizing garage sales with her three sisters, turning them into joyful annual traditions. They worked diligently, shared abundant laughter, and always treated themselves to breakfast and lunch during and afterwards. These cherished events brought great joy to each sister, strengthening their bond year after year.
Gloria leaves behind a remarkable legacy of beauty, love, and perseverance that will live on in our hearts forever. All will deeply miss her.
Preceding her in death are her sons Jermaine Mumphrey and Dominick James; her parents, Asa and Lola Belle Stine; sisters Lena Frances Stine (stillborn), and Kathyren Stine Taylor; and brother Charles Stine.
Left to cherish many wonderful memories is her husband, Jerry Mumphrey; children: Tamara Busby (Eric), Jerron Mumphrey (Dara); grandchildren, Ethan Busby, Addison Busby, Dominick Mumphrey, Jerron Mumphrey, Jr. and step-granddaughter Gabrielle Smith; sisters, Sandra Wynn (Charles), and Selena Stine; brothers, Asa Stine, Clyde Stine, and Jerry Stine (Patrice); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
