IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gwendolyn Senora
Coggs
December 20, 1947 – March 15, 2022
Gwendolyn Senora (Sno) Coggs was born December 20, 1947 to the union of James Russell and Artelia Williams in Crockett, Texas. At a very early age Senora, her twin brother, James Jr. and parents moved to Tyler, TX where she spent her childhood.
Senora attended Emmitt Scott High School in Tyler where she was an active member of the marching band and a majorette. Following high school Senora attended Tennessee State University before moving to Denver, Colorado where she began her professional career with the Federal Government. In Denver, Senora met her soul mate and life partner, Edward Coggs. They remained happily married for 48 years.
After several years in Denver, Senora and Ed continued their careers in Federal Government in Washington, D.C. There, Senora worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development and eventually the Department of Commerce before retiring in 2016. Senora completed undergraduate and Masters Degrees at Trinity University in Washington, D.C.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has been an important part of Senora's life and she has been an active and faithful member since 1992. As a member of the Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter she served in several positions including Delta Academy Stem Program and the Arts and Letters Committee where she mentored young ladies at Argyle Middle School. She helped them create productive journals, chaperoned them to movies as well as to the African American Museum in Washington, D.C.
Senora has been an active member of the East Texas Chapter of the Links, Incorporated since 2016. She served in several capacities including Chair of Protocol and Courtesy and the Alumna and Platinum Liaison. One Link who knows Senora very well said of her, "She is very meticulous. She was made in her beloved Mother's image and has a sense of humor that draws you into her fun-loving conversation."
Senora and Ed were faithful and devoted members of The People's Community Baptist Church in Maryland for more than 15 years where they also served as deacons. After working tirelessly in the church in many positions, Deaconess Coggs and her husband, Ed, were among the elite group chosen to participate in the two year Deacon/Deaconess Training Program which they completed in 2003. After training, they were assigned a leadership position in the Dan Tribal Family where, as a team lead, Senora was responsible for training and advising cell leaders. She visited nursing homes to serve and pray with the residents and even performed "The Night Before Christmas" at one facility. She was a true entertainer.
Senora was a member of the Potomac Valley Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. where she chaired the Newsletter Committee. She created first class newsletters and supported all of the activities that were sponsored by the organization.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Sr. and Artelia Williams, grandparents Joseph O. Williams, Gwendolyn Senora Williams and Abraham Thompson and Calanthia Betts Thompson. She is survived by her husband, Edward Coggs of Maryland; twin brother, James Jr. of Houston (wife, Vanessa Williams); uncle Alfred Thompson of New York City; Brother-in-law, Richard Thomas (wife, Aline); Brother-in-law Keith Thomas; Sister-in-law Patricia Brown. She also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Perkins and staff of Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, MD, cousin Dr. Vivian Lynette Porche of Houston and The People's Community Baptist Church staff and church family. The family would like to thank all of those who prayed with Senora and Ed, sent words of encouragement and comfort and any and all acts of kindness during this difficult time. Please continue to keep the family in your prayers.
