IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gwendolyn Luraine
Mitchell
August 11, 1963 – March 22, 2023
Gwendolyn Luraine Mitchell – named for her dear nana Ada Luraine Mitchell – was born August 11, 1963 to Andrew Lee Mitchell Sr. and Mary Ann Fields Mitchell. She was the first grand daughter for the Fields and Mitchell family and was spoiled by both. Her mother was concerned she would not walk – someone was always carrying her wherever she went! The family was faithful members of Greater Hopewell Baptist Church Swan where Rainey joined at a very early age under the Leadership of Rev L. L. McGee; singing in the youth choir.
She attended elementary school at T J Austin, then Mary Louise Phillips (elementary), William Monning Middle and Arlington Heights High school in FT Worth. Exceptionally bright she graduated at age 16 with a Dow Chemical scholarship to the University of Texas Arlington. Exceptionally beautiful, inside and out, she was a model for Neiman Marcus and won first place in several pageants.
Rainey became a "military brat" actually spending the last two weeks of her mother's basic training on Lackland Air Force Base (believe it or not). Many times when her mother travel for military training she and her two brothers accompanied her. Perhaps this is where she acquired her love of travel and exploration. Regardless of the location she would explore and make the most of what was in the area.
She adored children: spoiling countless, and eventually able to have her own – Kellee' Mitchell-Ash. Against medical odds two years later she and her husband, Carl Blaylock, welcomed David Carl Mitchell-Blacklock. Never satisfied with complacency Rainey returned to school at Texas College. She was selected as "Miss Success", graduating Suma Cum Laude with a degree in Business Administration.
When she could not obtain employment, she volunteered "where I want to work. Sooner or later they will need me." And they did! She was a substitute teacher, created and taught "Teen Abstinence" and worked at the Texas Health and Human Services. Her father introduced his children to a little known and minority under represented occupation – escort pilot.
Her health issues made this an ideal career. Fifteen years ago Rainey created Road Runner Express, was given the name "wonder woman" on her first trip. A woman was a rarity and a black one even more rare. Her tremendous skill at guiding a load safely to its destination quickly elevated her from the routine to "heavy haul and over sized super max loads." She obtained a security clearance to escort loads into Cape Canaveral. She was considered "one of the best".
Beautiful, witty, a numbers genius, so loved especially by the children, she departed these earthly bounds March 21.
