IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert Lee
"Cowboy" Phillips
September 7, 1945 – May 1, 2025
Herbert Lee "Cowboy" Phillips was born the 4th child to the late J.C Phillips and Ardelia Barnett Phillips on September 7, 1945 in Neches, Texas. He attended the Neches public schools. He was a member of the North
Tenneha Church of Christ in Tyler, Texas.
He worked for Tyler Pipe Industries for 14 years. He worked a side job at a local sales barn in earlier years where his love for horses grew and his attire changed to cowboy hats, boots, western shirts and jeans. He retired from the Tyler Independent School District after 22 years of service as a highly recommended bus driver for his daily routes, Debate and Swim Teams. During this highlight of his life, the nickname "Cowboy" originated. After a brief retirement, the love of the job and for his babies as he referred to his students, "Cowboy" realized his bus driving days were not over. He continued his career with Bullard Independent School District for 14 more years until his health would no longer allow him to.
You may have traveled area roadways and seen "Cowboy" parked on the side of the road selling produce to many people. If you wanted a
watermelon, "Cowboy" would surely sell you one. If you attended any Tyler Junior College Basketball Tournaments in the month of December, you may have seen "Cowboy" sitting in the top bleachers cheering on the teams and keeping his personal game stats.
During his first matrimonial union, two children were born Wanda Phillips & Michael Phillips both of the Fort Worth area.
Later he met and married the love of his life, Mamie Joyce Square on March 24, 1971 whom he remained married to for 54 years. She took
excellent care of him until his Heavenly Father requested the presence of a Cowboy Angel to drive a busload of Angels through the "Pearly Gates". Out of this union were born Kimberly Annette Phillips and Herbert Keith Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 5 brothers: Allen Phillips, Granuel Dean Phillips, Calvin Phillips, Kenneth Edwin "Pee Wee" Phillips
and Jimmy Lee Phillips.
"Cowboy" loved his family, friends & especially his grandchildren & great-grandchildren. He is lovingly known to his siblings as "Hub"
His memory will forever live on in Wife, Mamie Joyce Square Phillips; Daughters: Kimberly Annette Phillips-Colbert (JW), Bossier City, La and Wanda
