IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Pearl Houston
Turner
November 17, 1932 – December 23, 2023
Pearl Elizabeth Houston Turner was born November 17, 1932 in Tyler, TX, the beloved daughter of Sam D. and Susie Gower Houston. She was educated in the Tyler Public School system, and graduated from Emmett J. Scott High School in 1948. She furthered her studies at Prairie View A&M University, earning both a bachelor's degree in music and a bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1952. She pursued her master's degree at North Texas State University, where she was a member of the groundbreaking class that successfully integrated the school. Her academic endeavors also took her to Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Tyler.
Mrs. Turner was a life-long member of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church in Tyler, TX. She was united in marriage to Charles Edward Turner on April 6, 1957. To this union, one son was born, Charles E. Turner, II.
Mrs. Turner was dedicated to shaping young minds as an elementary school educator. She taught for two years in the public schools of Smith County, followed by an impressive thirty-seven years in the Dallas Independent School District. She retired from Albert Sidney Johnston Elementary School, where she was once voted Teacher of the Year. Her fervent prayer was that "some little child who sat in my presence was inspired by my work to make themselves an honest and productive citizen."
On December 23, 2023, Mrs. Turner passed away peacefully at her home. She is survived by her son, Charles E. Turner, II; two sisters-in-law: Edna S. Houston, MD and Mrs. Bernice Turner; one brother-in-law: Mr. Roy (Gwendolyn) Turner; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and life-long friends. She leaves behind a rich legacy of resilience, determination and strength, and the deeply rooted belief in the power of education, family, and faith.
